We have a disconnect between our theology (trusting in God to grow our ministries) and practices (turning to books, blogs, and conferences to grow our ministries). Just think about the questions we ask when a ministry experiences rapid growth:
- "What's your secret?"
- "What are you doing to grow your church?"
- "What do you suggest doing?"
- "What advise would you give on how to grow a church?"
The underlying assumption is pretty obvious, we assume that the growth happened because of something they did. We assume there is some natural and reproducible explanation for their success. That leads to a scary place where we believe in God, but we don't believe He's involved with His Bride. I'm slightly terrified of the idea that we can sit down and give a natural non-miraculous explanation for everything going on in the church in United States.
If we really believe there is a God who is actively involved in this world who empowers His people with His Holy Spirit and has sent them on a mission to make disciples, why do we spend so much time trying to figure out what other men are doing?
We have far too much faith in ourselves and far too little faith in God.
