Scoring Your Sermon: Music & Sermon Prep

Recently I've been experimenting with listening to different kinds of music while preparing my sermons.

I try to have strong emotional themes in my sermons which resonate with the experiences of the people listening. But too often sermon prep time involves me sitting in an office with a big stack of books...not exactly an emotional setting. Therefore, I started trying to imagine what would it look like to score my sermon. I ask myself, "What music matches the emotional tone I'm going for with the sermon?"

My latest series is called Healer. It's filled with themes of redemption and life change. Each week ends with someone's testimony being shared. Thus I've been listening to a lot of epic music which builds tension and releases.

My recent playlists include lots of:
  • This Will Destroy You
  • Explosions in the Sky
  • John Williams music
Over the summer I did a worship series, so naturally I had lots of worship music in my playlist.
