Professors Who Really Cared: Bill Jones

Two days ago, I wrote about how the two great groups of relationships you gain from Bible college are the students and the professors.  Yesterday I wrote about a professor who let me live in her home and ordered our class to help me move.  Today's professor wasn't as grandiose (I'm not sure what more a professor could do than Anita Cooper), but it was very thoughtful.

As I said yesterday, while I'm writing about two specific professors, my guess is that if I had guest writers I could come up with a person to share a story about every professor.

Bill Jones

At the time that  Bill Jones was my professor he was teaching courses on evangelism.  That was the course I took with him.  He has published multiple books, and he is friends with Josh McDowell. The year following when I took his course he went on to become to president of the University.

During one section of the course, we discussed different types of churches: traditional, high church, low church, contemporary, seeker, etc.  That night I sent him an email where I recommend some books on some current trends in church culture which he did not mention.  He was very thankful for my recommendations and ended up purchasing the books I recommended.

Two months later I was walking across campus, and I heard someone yelling my name.  I turn around to realize it's Bill Jones.  He pulls a stack of papers out of his pocket and hands them to me. My eyes quickly realize the pages are torn from a magazine.

"I was reading a magazine a couple of days ago and they reminded me of you.  So I've been carrying them around until the next time I saw you," he quickly explained before moving.

The soon to be president of the university was reading a magazine, and instantly thought of me. And for multiple days he carried around pages from the magazine for when he saw me next.

For me, that was a really big deal.
