Twenty Lessons I Learned During My First Six Months as a Pastor PART III

Obviously I've been a pastor for 5 years now, but these are notes I wrote many years ago.

11) The Devil Strikes When Good Things are Happening

I've never been a big spiritual warfare guy. I was never into Frank Peretti books. But the last six months have convinced me that something is going on behind the scenes. Every time something really great happens, it's followed closely by unexpected and often bizarre criticism or setbacks.

12) A Strong Pastor and Elder Board Makes Your Life Much Easier

Closely related to the previous point, when you're in leadership you become the target for much criticism and spiritual warfare. The worst feeling in the world is not knowing where you stand with the people around you and feeling that no one has your back.

Strong church leadership gives you that sense of security and guidance you need to continue through the hard times.

13) It's Hard to Let Go of Responsibilities

I have a very diverse set of skills which are used in the church. That's one of the reasons church ministry clicked with me. I was heavily involved in video editing, leading music, and running sound all before getting into the many aspects of student ministry. Even right now I'm over communication, connections, and student ministry.

When you have experience in a ministry area, it's very difficult to release control when you have a vision for what you want and better skills in the area.

14) Success Brings a New Set of Problems
15) Success is an Accident You Slip Into...and Not Always Repeatable
16) If Something Good is Happening, Something Bad is Coming...
17) Teenagers Can and Will Give More Time Than Adults
18) Teenagers Need Supervision
19) No Matter What I Do, Someone Will be Unhappy
20) Restrictions and Challenges Yield Creativity But Prevent Stupidity
