I'm a bit late to the parade but, thanks to a blog post by Matt Walsh, I was turned on to some amazing click-bait by someone called Amy Glass. The title of her wonderful piece of art, "I Look Down on Young Women With Husbands and Kids And I'm Not Sorry," and it is exactly what you'd expect from an article with that title. Originally, I wasn't going to link to the article, but I decided that it is such a wonderfully over-the-top article, I'm putting it in the "so bad it's good" category. It reads a bit like a Rush Limbaugh caricature of feminism. Or, as he would call Ms. Glass, a feminazi.
Here are a few amazing quotes from the article:
The nothing is referring to getting married and raising kids.
Obviously, if you're a stay at home mom (like my wife, my sister, my mother [well back in the day], and many of my wife's best friends), you should be pretty offended by now. As best I can tell, that was the entire point of the post. She wanted to write something so shocking and over-the-top it would attract people like me to comment on it, write-a response, and share the link. Like I said before, I wasn't going to do so, but she's just so over-the-top, I had to respond.
Before you judge her as being judgmental, read her follow up blog. You'll see another side of her.
THE FOLLOW UP
Two days after writing the most judgmental, anti-women, anti-children, anti-mothers, and anti-family blog I've read in a long time, she followed it up with more click bait, "Hilary Clinton Has Given Just as Much to the This World As the Stay At Home Wife in My 11a.m. Yogalates Class."
I was assuming it was an ironic title and the blog was written ironically. Honestly, I have no idea if it was or wasn't.
Here are some quotes from just two days later:
In case you've already forgotten the first quote of the blog, I repeat:
Who is she? Is this a brilliant joke? There's more than a small gap between these two views on feminism and how feminists view stay-at-home moms.
But she still had more to say...
More Thoughts on Moms
Just two days ago, she shared even more thoughts on how she views stay at home moms in a piece titled, "Is the Point of Having Kids Just to Not Be Lonely?"
The post itself isn't as over-the-top as the first post, but it's a nice bookend to this three part series of confusion.
There are a few nice quotes:
This affirms her previous statements. She values making money and name for oneself. Raising the next generation is only important if you can do it while still pursuing your dreams. A bizarre version of feminism, and an extreme version of materialism.
Amy Glass: Amazing Joke or Amazingly Over-the-Top Feminist?
Honestly, I don't know.
She writes for an online magazine called Thought Catalog. Was this just some brilliant ploy to rile up the internet? If so, bravo. Is this just a massive Funny or Die skit, and a famous comedian is going to reveal that they were behind this viral sensation?
Then again, she could be a real person. Who really believes what she's writing.
I guess there is a 3rd option. She could just be a clever writer who understands how click bait works. She cracked the code of viral blogging. If you write something so absurdly shocking with a dumb enough title, people will click. People will comment. People will share. I sure hope it isn't option 3. That's not nearly as much fun.
