Drifting - Don't Fall Away (from 2009)

[This is a blog I originally wrote in 2009]

Hebrews 2

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Imagine how many people could be saved from so much pain and so many mistakes by paying attention to what they had heard? There are dozens of books and articles written about the epidemic of youth group kids who go to college and fall away from the faith. I've heard dozens of scholars give their explanation. None of their explanations are any more satisfying than the author of Hebrews simple explanation, they didn't pay careful attention to what they had heard.

Looking back at the youth group I graduated from nearly 10 years ago. I could list names of people who've fallen away. While many of them were active participants and generally moral teenagers, I can't think of a single person I would have said paid "careful attention" to the scriptures who fell away from the faith.

Unfortunately drifting isn't a danger which disappears with age. We're always within reach of drifting. At no point in time do we out grow the need to pay careful attention to the teaching of scripture.
