Charlie Hall on Being a Servant Worship Leader #ASW13

Yesterday Charlie Hall spoke at the Austin Stone Worship Conference on being a servant leader. Here are my notes.  I did my best to record accurately, but I was recording live. So don't take notes on his personal life as a flawless biography.

HIS BACKGROUND

He was saved at age 17.  Early on he felt was called to be a pastor. His original understanding of a pastor was limited to Baptist stereotypes, but he realized he was called to pastor through music

After 12 years as a pastor on staff, he had a falling out with his local church and switched to just itinerant worship leading.  While he did have Christian community, but he was disconnected from the church for about 4 years.   About four years ago he finally returned to the church and embarrassed God's plan for Christian community.

BIG IDEA #1 - LIVE ONE LIFE

COSTUMES

We all have costumes we wear which hide who we really are.

  • We want to isolate ourselves.
  • We want to look better than we actually are.
  • We’re scared of being rejected again.

·      If you have five people all wearing costumes it’s like we're all wearing SUMO SUITS. We’re all just bumping into each other.

CANYONS

We all have canyons in our lives.

On one side we have what people see and praise us for…a canyon…and then the other side which is our character, integrity, and what we do when no on is watching.

The secret to living one life:
Teach me your way, Lordthat I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart,  that I may fear your name. - Psalm 86:11

We can’t use costumes promote the surface level (promotions, jobs, crowds, etc.).
We need to squish the canyon and live one life.

  • One life doesn’t have costumes
  • One life doesn’t have canyons
PRAY:  God help me to live one life.  Help me to not wear costumes and live in isolation.  Help me to shrink the canyon so that my public and private life are the same

BIG IDEA#2 - LIVE IN YOUR CALLING

A calling isn’t a job

  • Immaturity says, “Get glory from the stage”
  • Maturity says, “Get glory from my life”

HIS PERSONAL CONFESSION

I spent a lot of years for chasing dreams for my life.  Only recently have I started chasing God and his calling for my life

POINTS:

  • Living your calling means meeting with God and letting him speak for you.
  • 2nd Timothy 1:5 (this reference is off)  He referenced a verse on supplementing your faith.
  • Give away your calling….pass it down….be raised up and raise up others.

BIG IDEA #3 - Live for Jesus With Jesus for the Glory of the Father Through the Power of the Spirit Because of the Gospel

BIG IDEA #4 - Love & Shepherd Our People With the Love of our Father

POINTS

  • Weep over faces not crowds
  • Show hospitality

We (the church) are losing our way.  We're forgetting who we're supposed to be worshipping.  We have a copy of a copy of a cop of a picture.  People need a fresh picture of our God.
